Alejandro Benavides is a Swiss - Spanish painter born in the city of Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
His passion for Expressionism and figurative art has been developed through his friendships and exchange of ideas and techniques with different artists in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Alejandro focuses his work on portraits and nudes due to his deep attraction to the complexity of the human being. His work is deeply connected to our identity."Of course everybody seems different from an exterior physical perspective, but when we go deeper we can discover different layers, built on one's origins, cultures, tastes, passions, fears and dreams. I am especially driven to unearth and expose my subject's history, which has made them who they are today. Everything is there, written within their gaze."
The process in each project goes from the inside to the outside, illustrating what each model reflects through their bodily expression.
"From the inside, physiologically, we are all similar. The way we are made, everything is at the same place. It was like this long ago and it will be long after. Other similarities are our abilities to feel, to love, to be good, to create. These senses are real, present but we cannot touch them.
The aim in the exchange between the painter and the model is to totally absorb the latent emotions that we all have in ourselves, but that we hide most of the time, thereby revealing the inner truth that longs to be released.
The final pose that is chosen isn't predefined by the painter - it is the result of an exchange between the two individuals. It isn't simply a matter of collaboration but of complicity, established between the painter and his model. Trust is here predominant, due to the intimacy and the fragility that are revealed.
Alejandro’s canvas’ evoke a vision of the "intensity of sharing" between two beings.
